1 Thessalonians 1:1-3

Have you ever come across someone who by the nature of their character caused you to pause and do an attitude check? I mean just being around them was convicting in a good way. On the plane back from my trip to the Philippines, I met a young Filipina lady who was raised mostly in the States, but went back to the Philippines for college, but lived in a squalid squatter village with her grandma, she scraped away maggots from her food when she ate and rode for an hour on a sweltering, smelly city bus to school. She had just finished up and had such a burden for the squatter children she decided to study for the next 7 years to become a pediatrician so she could specifically serve impoverished kids. What I remember about her was a look she had in her eye of love and a quiet determination. I had to ask myself, "Am I burdened for something like that?"

When I look at the church in Thessalonica, I get the same kind of conviction in a good way. As we start a verse by verse journey through this book, I am getting more and more excited about what God is going to do in our lives. At first, I was attracted to the book because it had good practical teaching about basic Christian doctrines, especially the return of Christ. But now I also see some other reasons why the timing is good for us to hunker down and let God speak to us through this great book. I would like to invite you to try an experiment with me. 1 Thessalonians has 5 chapters, try reading one chapter a day and read through the book each week as we go through the series - either individually or as a family - similar to what we did during the Easter season. See how it goes and I am sure you will get even more out of the series.

Ok with that in mind, let's get started.

1 Timothy 4.12-16

When God calls someone to serve Him, He is not hindered by their age. No one is ever too old or too young. Timothy was young and had a tough assignments. He was assigned to deal with some problems at a church in the city of Ephesus. There were people in the church that were teaching things that were wrong and against the Bible. These false teachers were threatening to lead the people into sin and spiritual apostasy. To make matters worse, they were older than him and in that culture, young people were not respected by older people. But Timothy had to serve God and deal with the problem, so what does Paul, his mentor say? 2 things: set an example through your life and don’t neglect using your spiritual gift to serve these older people.

1 Peter 4:10-11
10Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
- 1 Peter 4:10-11 (NIV)

Last week, we started a series about spiritual gifts. Spiritual gifts are special abilities given by God to every person who places their faith in Jesus Christ. You are saved to serve. The Bible says everyone who is saved into God's family also has a place to serve other Christians and non-Christians to the glory of God. Its what family members do for other family members!

So today, I want to talk about the "great variety of gifts" mentioned in the Bible, for four reasons: 1) God does not want you to be ignorant of them, 2) I believe God will help confirm the gift He has given to you and 3) You will appreciate the differences in other Christians and avoid unnecessary conflict with those who are different than you and 4) You can grow in your spirituality as you learn from those who have strengths in areas in which you are weak.

Finding Your Fit 1 Peter 4.10-11
10 God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. 11 Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.
- 1 Peter 4.10-11

Whether you are a believer or not, I think you will agree with me that nothing limits people working together and achieving great results more than selfishness. Nothing disrupts human harmony more than selfishness.
